Tobelo Cafe |

Recently voted as ‘Best new entry’ restaurant by a popular entertainment magazine in Bali, Tobelo Café quickly gained recognition as ‘that good new restaurant in Jalan Oberoi’, aka eat street. Good food and a great location, surrounded by villas and hotels, has made it popular among expats and tourists alike.
The two story building is neat and comfortable, tucked between a convenience shop and a property agency. There is a charming little wooden terrace in the front and an air conditioned interior with wooden wall features and some lovely vintage Balinese photographs.
Chef Liannata Halim, a graduate of STP Bali has years of experience working in restaurants in Bali, Singapore and London. She planned the Tobelo menu carefully and with enormous pride, “It’s my first restaurant so I am very excited about the menu,” the young chef said with a smile.
As a starter we were presented with the most popular of Tobelo’s dishes, the oh so tasty Cheesy Mushroom, a large fresh button mushroom, breaded, deep fried and dressed with melted cheese and sweet mayonnaise. For main course there was a Fillet of Fish with Black Olive Sauce, a charbroiled white snapper fish served with zucchini, carrot, pesto, mushroom, and black olive sauce; a perfect dish for a light and fulfilling lunch. But our favorite has to be the Pollo Di Fungi, a breaded chicken fillet filled with bacon, cheddar cheese and mushroom, served with vegetables and mash potatoes. It melts in your mouth with a warm and savory taste that must come from the homemade cream which is the pride of the chef. Other items on the menu include local food such as oxtail soup, nasi campur, nasi goreng, pork ribs, and different kinds of salads, sandwiches, burgers, steaks and pizzas, all at a good price. The drink list is equally impressive with coffees, smoothies, juices and teas. We tried a Restorative Smoothie, a refreshingly tasty blend of avocado, banana, lemon zest and yoghurt which would be perfect for breakfast, and Teh Tarik, an ice tea with milk.
With hopes to expand into a restaurant chain, I must say that this small sidewalk café can definitely compete with any of the big international restaurants in the area. It has good tasty food that caters to everyone, and has a delivery service too! MK
