A fresh breeze washes over me and I am soon ensconced on a big fat day bed in front of the pool with a cocktail in hand. This is the life……
The Stones is the newest building to grace the Kuta seafront and certainly the most magnificent. Rising like a wave, this feat of architecture and engineering looks a little imposing, but climbing the stairs I find a light, airy and very comfortable space, where there is enough going on to keep me entertained for hours. The first floor is home to the stylish, open air Salt Restaurant; and Mods a 60’s themed night club. My greatest discovery is a music room at the back with shelves stacked with obscure vinyl records, and a turntable so you can chill out, pop on some headphones and spin a record or two while enjoying the fabulous ocean views. The room next door is equally enticing, a library-like space, with magazines, and some fabulous pop art books; just the place to curl up on the couch for an afternoon. However I am digressing, because my destination is Infamy, the tropical roof top lounge, complete with a pool, a bar, and dazzling views: In fact Kuta never looked so good! The 360 degree panorama takes in the coast stretching from the Bukit Peninsula to Canggu, as well as the sprawling mass of windy streets and palm trees that make up Kuta. A fresh breeze washes over me and I am soon ensconced on a big fat day bed in front of the pool with a cocktail in hand. This is the life……. Cocktails suit the tropical mood and I particularly enjoy the Stones Cooler, an intoxicating concoction of rum, sugar and ginger packed with lemon and mint. The Rasberry Martini is strong, pink and delicious, and cleverly mixed so that that you don’t taste the alcohol, while the Miami Vice is a unique and fanciful mix that is half Daiquiri and half Pina Colada, a fun and tasty ‘two in one’ cocktail. There is also a sweet green Envy Me, which is definitely one for the ladies! Or, if you are like me, and prefer your beer mixed with something, then you will enjoy the range of ales infused with strawberry, lychee and pineapple. The Stones wisely appointed renowned chef Desyanto Nugroho to head their kitchen and we order a Trilogy of Appetizers with Chicken Leek Skewers, Beef Skewers and some excellent Vietnamese Spring Rolls; and follow this with a Trilogy of Desserts, a fragrant fluffy Tequila Cheesecake with a delicious crunchy base; an unusual, delicately flavored Apple Jelly; and a rich bitter Mud Cake sweetened with a thick caramel sauce. The building and the decor are unique and kind of fascinating, and it’s obvious that no expense has been spared, and no detail left unnoticed in creating this extraordinary venue. From the pebble lined pool, to the bar covered in mother of pearl, the tapped copper wall features, the curves and textures of different building materials that include timber, onyx, granite and slate. GM Luke explains the concept behind The Stones as a “Party House where you can choose the experience too suit your mood. ” So, you can enjoy a leisurely meal; kick back by the roof top pool; or party hard in the club. For now, fuelled by cocktails and good food, we are in the perfect mood for watching the sunset and listening to the DJ spinning some ambient tunes. The setting sun is complimented by the fibre optics lighting and we are suddenly awash in a swirling mass of colours. Absolutely Fabulous!
