Vi Ai Pi

Vi Ai Pi is one of those venues that really comes into its own when the sun goes down, and the sensual lighting comes into play. The modern minimalist design has an industrial feel to it, furnishings are predominatly black and there is an entire wall of aluminium. Dangling ivy, and plant boxes filled with tropical vines have a softening effect, as does the fact that the space is semi open air, with birds eye views over the heart of Kuta, so you really feel like your are part of the action. I have always enjoyed the lounge setting on the top floor, with its neon red strip lighting, deep red sofas, red glass walls and silver disco balls.

A Kuta Beach seems an appropriate cocktail to start with, and when the waiter brings it to the table the name makes immediate sense. The liquid in the lower part of the glass is the colour of the deepest blue ocean, while the creamy foam on top the colour of a pale sandy beach. The effect is quite striking and this isn't just some gimmicky drink, it actually tastes great with its combination of Smirnoff Vanilla, coconut liqueur, vanilla ice cream and Blue Curacao. Next up is a B52 I haven't had one of these since I was a teenager, and it is every bit as good as I remember, with its layers of Cointreau, Kahlua and Baileys, and a taste that is smooth, sweet, fiery and bitter all at the same time.

A well mixed Mojito is really the perfect cocktail for the tropics and is always a pleasure to drink, and the Vi Ai Pi Rasberry Mojito certainly ticks all the boxes. The Smirnoff Rasberry makes a nice twist, and there is lots of fresh mint, tangy limes, and just a dash of white sugar and soda.

Flaming shooters seem kind of appropriate in a Kuta club, choose from Waterfall, Lamborghini or Bikini, we opt for the Flaming Vertigo a lethal green base of Smirnoff, light rum, gin, Tequila Jose, Blue Curacao and Cointreau; the bartender pours flaming Sambucca down a Galliano bottle and into the glass. The taste, aroma and effect is totally in Intoxicating. The 'Buy one get one free' promotion runs all night and includes Caipirinha, Caiparoska, Cuba Libre and Gin Fizz.
