SandPit0

This lovely beach shack cafe sits right on the sand in front of Bacio on Double Six beach. The laid back, shoes off, 'just been for a swim' vibe is 100 percent pretention free, what you see is what you get. Owner Tj grew up in Jakarta; against a backdrop of traffic jams and the chaos of big city life, he would dream of moving to Bali and opening a café of the beach. Last year while holidaying on the island, he found 'the spot'. The rest as they say is history. He describes himself as a "foodaholic" and aims to capture the old school vibe of Kuta, a throwback to the days when you could get good cheap food on the beach. He tells me that he made a promise to himself that he would never substitute price for taste, "It's not about getting rich, it's about being happy." The customers are happy because they get a great deal, TJ is happy because he gets to work on the beach, and the staff are happy because here at Sandpit it's like one big family. I have to say, I really like this place!

While we are chatting the chef is grilling our fresh Seafood Combi on the beach side barbecue – Jimbaran style; and I sip an excellent Sandpit's Lil' Secret a cocktail thick with fresh strawberries and watermelon, muddled with mint and a kick of gin. There is also a refreshing Coconut Daiquiri filled with creamy young coconut; and a Balinese Illusion served in a carafe – the addition of pineapple juice creating a pleasant twist on the ubiquitous arak-based Jungle Juice. Those looking for a healthy elixir can choose from fresh juices, smoothies, and the special wheatgrass menu. I really enjoy the Tropical Infusion with the earthy flavour of wheat grass given a fruity make-over with the addition of watermelon and pineapple!

Grilled seafood is a Sandpit specialty, but there is also a range of Balinese and western style comfort food. The well thought out menu has something for everyone; Crab Corn Soup, Bruschetta, Greek Salad, Pizza, Beef Rendang, Ayam Betutu. We try a Chili Crab, which is beautifully presented and just spicy enough, while the Chef's Burger is colossal, featuring a hearty homemade beef patty, egg, cheese, ham and all the trimmings. The Chef's Menu Seafood Combi for 2 arrives fresh from the grill, a generous platter piled with fillets of snapper, tuna and a delicious mahi mahi, as well as prawns and calamari, all infused with Balinese spices and a smoky barbecue flavour. It is quite a feast, and combined with a complimentary Greek Salad as an appetiser, and a Fruit Salad for dessert is truly an excellent deal. We also somehow manage to squeeze in some Pineapple Fritters served with strawberry ice cream and chocolate sauce.

There is something magical about sitting at a table on the beach, toes wedged into the sand, the waves rolling in, enjoying really good food that doesn't cost a fortune.
TJ tells me "I want people to leave with a smile on their face," we have been smiling since the moment we arrived! AB
