Are you a lover of art and gourmet food? Do you like Javanese and French cuisine? If so, then Warung Art Café is the place for you! Located a mere stone throw from Mercure Resort Sanur, the restaurant feeds the soul and also aims to educate, acculturate, persuade and inspire.
The first thing you will notice is the art work, the two story building is packed with paintings by Indonesian and foreign artists in styles ranging from Impressionism to realism. Some of the artists may already be familiar to you; Salya, Faris, Aris, Doddy, Pras, Nanang, Afdy and Nur. In the outdoor garden area, you’ll spot a large size painting of two Balinese girls in traditional clothes hanging on the wall next to the specials board. Several small paintings are carefully arranged on the pillar next to the bar which offers a selections of local wines and classic drinks including the famous Bloody Mary, Tom Collins, Screwdriver and Shirley Temple as well as some more innovative cocktails.
More art work can be found in the al fresco dining area on the second floor, where walls, tables and even the floor are covered in paintings. Brown tables and chairs complement the artistic ambience, and the ceiling is gorgeously decorated with colorful fabric – red, white, yellow, green and blue, a perfect nuance of a rainbow. Subdued lightning and softly played Javanese traditional music create a relaxing dining scene.
The menu is small and well mannered and offers Javanese cuisine with French zest. For starters, we try their signature Art Café Ote-Ote fried vegetables with sambal, Crunchy Vegetables Spring Rolls, and a delicious Avocado and Shrimp Salad. As the main course, we choose their reputed Ayam Goreng Jawa – fried chicken with Java spices, served with rice and sambal. Another favorite Rendang Daging Sapi – boiled beef with coconut milk, is served with Nasi kuning (steamed rice with coconut milk and herbs). The beef is slowly cooked, not too spicy, and very tender, and the rice is delicious. Other recommended dishes include Homemade Grilled Chicken Satay, Beef Steak Fillet served with three pepper sauce, Red Snapper in a Burgundy shallot sauce and Herbs Marinated Grilled Chicken Kebab. To conclude this artistic lunch, we enjoy the special Homemade Tiramisu, Coconut Cream Brulée and Fried Banana Split with Vanilla Ice Cream.
This is a restaurant we would happily visit again and again with its abundant art collection, casual ambience, friendly and efficient service, good selection of food and genuinely affordable prices. Come for lunch, dinner, maybe a cocktail, or just to enjoy the artistic scenery. You may even find a painting that you want to take home! AM
