Warung D’Sawah |
It was lunch time on a Wednesday in Kerobokan and the heat, and the traffic were intense as we drove down Jalan Raya Kerobokan. Warung D’Sawah is located on the main strip surrounded by furniture shops, but all this is left behind as we follow a secret path framed by trees and lush foliage that leads to the warung. We eventually emerge at a huge open space encircled by rice fields, (or sawah in Indonesian). Owner Ketut Dovid Udayana, is a man who prioritizes health and quality in everything that he does, and the restaurant offers a menu with a broad array of Balinese, Indonesian, Chinese, and Western dishes. I recognized the Sate Lilit Ayam that is paired with my favorite Balinese Sambal Matah; the sate is rich with the sweetness of grated coconut and wrapped in bamboo skewers giving a pleasant bamboo aroma. I discover that their sambal matah is made of chili pepper, shrimp paste, lemongrass and coconut oil brought directly from Tabanan. Why Tabanan? Because the owner is from there, and the area is rich with poultry and good quality vegetables including coconut, which he brings all the way down to Kerobokan to supply his customers. The Ayam Betutu comes with rice, vegetable soup, sate lilit ayam, eggs, and vegetable salad in lawar. The tenderness of the white breast is the result of soaking in a marinade of Balinese spices for many hours, which makes it very tempting. Next is Grilled Snapper which also looks appealing with a red home made sauce that is flavorful and best enjoyed with the company of warm white rice and sambal matah. This dish is a must for fish lovers. Nasi Campur Special is an option for those who like to experience different things at once, containing white rice, vegetable, chicken skewer, corn fritters, fried chicken and sambal uleg, a cooked red chili condiment. It is rich in choices and tastes. The most mouth watering part of the meal for me was the Bebek Goreng. The duck is boiled with spices first to make the meat tender and rich, it is then fried, so it is crispy outside, soft inside and accompanied with the now crunchy spices and sambal uleg, undoubtedly a perfect match. We finish our meal with some yummy drinks. One is D’Sawah tea, which is a warm mix of milk, tea, crushed lemongrass, ginger and cloves. It tastes healthy and delicious, and comes with sugar on the side. There is also a whole Tabanan Coconut which is sweet, refreshing and naturally cool.
