We spot Waroeng Roof Top as we drive up the hill towards GWK, it’s the only roof top restaurant in the area, so it’s not difficult. We make our way up three flights of stairs and are rewarded with a panoramic view that takes in Jimbaran Bay, the busy Jalan Uluwatu, and miles and miles of tropical forest. A lovely breeze takes the edge off the heat of the day and we soak up the view and enjoy the chill out soundtrack while we wait for sunset.
Waroeng Roof Top was opened earlier this year by two friends, Yuanita and Dino who wanted to escape the rat race of Jakarta and enjoy the lifestyle of Bali. After months of searching Dino spotted the building with it’s expansive rooftop, and a concept was born. They purposely kept things simple, the two dining floors are fresh and spacious and the atmosphere relaxed and casual. Wall hangings with Buddhist writings offer food for thought, ‘Life is not a race but a journey to be savored,’ seems highly appropriate considering the comfortable and easy surrounds that are highly conjucive to hanging out .
The menu is a case of east meets west, with Indonesian favorites such as Nasi Campur and Oxtail soup alongside curries, chicken wings, fish and chips, sandwiches, burgers and various breakfast items. Barbecue Pork Ribs are a best seller, with good reason, the ribs are generous with ample soft juicy flesh, and the homemade barbecue sauce is particularly tasty. A side of vegetables and potato wedges make this a substantial meal. The Bebek Betutu features Peking Duck wrapped in banana leaf, the taste is light and delicate and it comes with spicy sambal, pickled vegetables and rice. The Gado Gado is served sushi style, the vegetables are wrapped in cabbage leaves, with crunchy temple, tofu and a rich peanut sauce on the side. The Chefs salad with cocktail sauce is simple but good.
For dessert we opt for Pancakes, which are small and thick, and have been grilled in butter and topped with strawberry ice cream. We also try the Fried Bananas, rather than batter, these have been encased in spring roll wraps and topped with that uniquely Indonesian combination of chocolate and cheese. It works! Finally I manage to squeeze in a Smoothy, made with mixed fruit, strawberry ice cream and honey. Beer, juice and soft drinks are also available.
Dusk turns to night and we bask under a crescent moon and a blanket of stars. Below us the lights of Jimbaran flicker and glow. Dino, who used to be a DJ in Jakarta is mixing up some cool jazz tracks. With generous portions and mains starting from around RP 25,000, Waroeng Roof Top is truly a great deal, and a highly pleasant place to spend some time. AB
