S MART0

smart6.jpgBrought to us by the creaters of  Bali Deli,  S Mart is a very smart, brand spanking new supermarket on Jalan Sunset. It is so new in fact that they are still in the process of stocking the freezers when we visit. It looks promising. The  concept of S Mart is to  bring quality products at a fair price and to provide a  comfortable ‘at home’ atmosphere for its customers.

The staff are lovely and very helpful and the walls are surrounded by giant photos and murals of smiley happy people eating, laughing, enjoying life, which is fitting because, as the Lets Eat team knows, food is one of life’s greatest pleasures. The design is fresh and modern with  attractive pine shelving units, good lighting and rich textured creamy wall paper with a regal  motif.

The  concept of S Mart is to  bring quality products at a fair price and to provide a  comfortable ‘at home’ atmosphere for its customers.

I browse the shelves and find all the trappings of a gourmet food shop,  smart8.jpgimported cheeses, cold cuts, frozen goods, wrapped sandwiches; and a great array of western convenience food like Instant Mash, Pancake mix, baby food, salad dressings, jams and marmalades, fine chocolate and confectionary and what must surely be the most extensive array of pasta in Bali. There is also a good selection of imported beers.

SFS (Smart Food Service) is the homebrand for S Mart and incorporates a range of herbs, spices, nuts and pulses all attractively presented on racks. One corner is dedicated to baked goods and fresh baguettes, Bavarian loaves and Walnut and Raisin bread line the shelves. There are also extensive offerings from S Mart homebrand ‘Bread and Grain’ with prepackaged croissants, pastries and cookies, as well as a deli counter filled with enticing patisserie items like eclairs, profiteroles, cakes and truffles. The prices are excellent  -  a whole apple tart costs just RP 58,000. A small section near the entrance has maps and magazines and there is even  a computer with free internet use for customers.

The S cafe is out the back and makes a lovely spot for a coffee break or a light meal. It is reminiscent of a conservatory  and has a Mediterranean type feel to it with green window shutters, a wrought iron balcony and a small fountain. Executive Chef Putu Suryawijaya describes the menu as ‘Classic traditional food with a modern presentation. It  is very well priced and the menu stays true to concept Smartwiches, Smart Salads, and  breakfasts sets, like the Tough night which comes with juice, eggs, coffee and a berocca. We enjoy all the food;  a rich and tasty Mushroom soup, a Seafood Salad, and an aromatic and authentic Lamb Curry and polish things off with  a tasty homemade Apple pie.

Catering is also available and you will soon be able to find S Marts in Jimbaran, Sanur and Ubud.  Very Smart Indeed! AB
