Today, however is all about the cocktails, starting with the famous Lychee Martini. The delicate fruity perfume awakens the senses and the first sip enlivens the taste buds as the bitterness of gin meets the sweetness of lychee, creating an unusual and very pleasant sensation. Other innovative Martinis include Pomegranate, Tiramisu and Peppermint Chocolate Latte. There are over 100 wines and more than 70 cocktails to choose from as well as an extensive list of top shelf spirits available by the glass and the bottle. 'Sparkling Gems' include Dazzling Julep and Sparkling Cosmo while there are also, 'Brisk Beer Cocktails' and 'X-rated Love Potions.' Margaritas can be frozen or classic with flavours including Strawberry, Wild Berry and Mango. I try the latter, a towering icy concoction with the colour and taste of the ripest mango. Mocktails are excellent, such as the Aloe Bali Sunrise and the Cantaloop Iced Tea brimming with a lovely combination of fresh mint, peaches and strawberries which can be scooped out with a spoon.
As well as a full a la carte menu, including the famous Babi Hu'uling, the Hu'u take on Bali's classic Babi Guling, there is also a Small Bites menu, which is ideal for grazing or for late night snacking. We share an immaculately presented Mezze Platter with a mix of sate, duck spring rolls, Bintang batter tiger prawns, chicken wings and vegetable samosas. The Little Taste of Sweet Journey is a dessert medley with all kinds of lovely stuff, like moist banana cakes, mango cheesecake, chocolate cake and dadar (coconut filled pancakes.) While the garden provides a lovely setting for dinner and pre party cocktails, things heat up in the club after 9, with live djs every night, and at least one special event weekly. Chill Thursdays attract a regular following, with 2 for 1 Bintangs and Margaritas, complimentary chilli nachos, and a live band playing requests. \AB
